New iPhones likely to be without SIM card slots in Austria too

There is likely to be a lot of excitement. This is because the upcoming iPhone 17 models will probably no longer work with a conventional SIM card in Austria either. Instead, iPhone users will probably have to rely exclusively on an eSIM.

In recent weeks, there have been increasing signs that the new iPhones will also be eSIM-only in Europe. Futurezone has also heard that domestic industry circles are expecting such a move from Apple.

In the US, iPhones have only been sold without a SIM card slot since 2022. Since the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, Apple phones have only been available on the US market with eSIM.

eSIM-only on the rise

It is almost certain that the slim iPhone 17 Air will altogether dispense with a SIM card slot. Since the case is supposed to be extremely slim, the Air model will probably only work with eSIM worldwide.

Whether this will also apply to the standard iPhone 17 model and the two Pro models is still unclear. However, rumors suggest that Apple could use the eSIM-only momentum of the Air model to phase out conventional SIM cards in other markets as well.

Europe and Austria would be obvious choices in this case. This is because all well-known mobile phone providers now also offer their tariffs with an eSIM in this country. Some tariffs are even only available in combination with an eSIM.

The end of the SIM card?

If the new iPhones do come without a conventional SIM card slot, it will be interesting to see how the industry reacts. Apple has always been a pioneer in such matters – think of the end of the headphone jack.

It is therefore quite possible that other manufacturers will follow suit with eSIM-only devices in the foreseeable future. It is also conceivable that in the future, even more mobile phone tariffs will work exclusively with an eSIM. Sooner or later, this will probably lead to the definitive end of the physical SIM card.

New iPhones are coming in September

Whether Apple will herald the end of the traditional SIM card in Austria will become clear in September, only when the new iPhone 17 models are presented and official information about the respective markets is published. Incidentally, this year’s iPhone event is likely to take place in the week beginning September 8.
